Obituary

Thomas C. McCaffrey Jr, 72, entered eternal life on May 27, 2026 after a brave battle with cancer in Newport, WA.  An engineering graduate of Spokane Community College, he was an expert in construction and transportation infrastructure. A U.S. Army veteran, Tom served during the cold war from 1971-1973 with the 40th Armored Division, Berlin Brigade in Germany. After retiring from a 20-year career as a road engineer with Pend Oreille County, WA in 2017, he again served his country restoring historic sites as an engineer for the US Department of Transportation, Western Federal Lands until 2022. Born in Seattle, WA in 1953 to Cora Covert of Spokane, WA, and Thomas C. McCaffrey, Sr. of Seattle, WA, his father was a career U.S. merchant marine who also served in the Pacific during WWII. Thomas's career highlights include restoration of historic tunnels in Mt. Rainer National Park and the Columbia River Gorge; constructing portions of the famous Sheraton resort in Maui, Hawaii; guard duty of convicted WWII war criminal Rudolf Hess in Berlin's Spandau Prison. Survived by sisters Donna McCaffrey and Judith Whipple; son Thomas McCaffrey III, daughter-in-law Amy and their two children of Yakima, WA; daughter Nicole Allen of Wenatchee, WA and a large extended family.

A celebration of life ceremony will be posted here when the family knows when he will be buried in his beloved Newport, WA.
