Stefan Borys Mischenko

July 7, 1948 – February 28, 2023

Stefan Borys Mischenko, 74, of Priest River, Idaho, passed away February 28, 2023, peacefully in his

home in the mountainous area outside of Ione, Washington. He was born in a displaced persons camp in

Muhldorf, Germany, the son of Borys and Nina Mischenko, on July 7, 1948. At the age of two, his family

was sponsored for immigration to the United States and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on October 24,

1950 to start a new life. The Mischenko family traveled by train across the country to Northern Idaho,

settling down in Priest River where Stefan grew up with his parents and 5 brothers. He developed a

passion for the outdoors that fondly remained with him throughout his life.

Stefan attended school in Priest River, ID and Newport, WA. Stefan married and relocated to Western

Washington, eventually becoming a long-term resident of Marysville where he raised his family. He had

an established career in the lumber industry. In 1975, Stefan was hired on at Northwest Hardwoods in

Arlington, Washington where he retired after 30 years. Stefan moved back to Northern Idaho to be near

his mother during her final years. Stefan eventually settled into a quiet home on acreage in the

mountains where he grew up and he enjoyed living with his dog, Diablo, and cats, elk, deer, bears,

moose and wild turkeys with an occasional cougar. Stefan thrived in the outdoors. His hobbies included

hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, quadding and boating. He was an avid gun enthusiast. Little known fact

is that Stefan was a talented sketch artist and could draw almost any animal by memory. He found joy in

exploring the mountains and caring for his pets.

Stefan is survived by his loving children Scott (Denise) Mischenko, Stephanie Mischenko, Shannon

(Ramon) Valera and Shawna Mischenko. His grandchildren Aneissa (Chris) Meacham, Adrienne (Tom)

Shaffer, Christopher Tacker-Mischenko, Austin Mischenko, Soren Valera, Isaiah Valera, Elijah Valera, Eila

Connell, Amara Connell, Logan Connell, Josh (Natasha) Campbell, Demarae (Craig) Howard, Michael

Coles. Great Grandchildren Cayson Gonzales, Bennett Shaffer, Salem Meacham, Noah Howard and Brier

Howard, as well as brothers Ladimer (Ellen) Mischenko, Alex Mischenko and many beloved nieces,
