Rachel May Lewis was born in Downing Missouri to Harry and Emma Lewis. Her parents were
trained educators, serving their communities in the public schools and local churches. Laboring
in the Iowa summer heat under metal roofs, they guided itinerant farmers into literacy. The
youngest of seven, our young mother could be found swimming in Iowa rivers or eating salted
rhubarb from her favorite perch in her favorite tree. A 'tomboy' by her own description, she was
a favored companion given she could run and jump as high as any lad. She played competitive
basketball in high school and loved drama class. The mother we knew loved poetry, beautiful
choral music, her dog Trooper, and the state of Iowa. She loved her mother deeply as did all
who crossed Emma's path.
As an adult, Rachel loved her children fiercely. She sacrificed to care for them until the day she
passed. She was wise, intelligent, beautiful, and witty beyond measure. Her advisement was
sought by many, and she could read a room like no other. Mom knew how to patiently watch
and hope for evidence of character. She served the City of Newport as City Clerk for 7 years and
spent 31 years at the PUD as Assistant to the General Manager.
She left us on the fifth of July at the age of 82. She leaves a daughter, Naomi Oscarson (and
Edward); and a son, Aaron Nickelson (and Joy). She leaves four grandchildren with a great
grandchild expected in February.
A special mention for mom's dear friend, Rudy Bergau. Mom loved and cared for Rudy and his
heart was deeply hers. They watched over one another. Seasoned ICU nurses were moved to
tears as he wept at her bedside. Our entire family is grateful to him and his dear family, now
ours.
Heartfelt thanks to John Rothstom RN, who came in from retirement to be at the bedside for
wise counsel and support. When he walked onto that unit, it was clear he held rock star status

even retired. He cares deeply for the staff and they regard him highly, nurses and physicians
alike. The ICU nurse caring for us called John 'a treasure'.
Rachel M Nickelson was highly respected by all who knew her, and loved by those close to her.
Her faith in Jesus Christ was her constant strength. She looked forward to returning to Him and
the family waiting for her with great anticipation. We will miss her terribly until we see her
again.
Services to be held August 22nd from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Newport Community Church
with a reception to follow; the Reverand Daniel Berg presiding. All who want to share in
honoring her memory are invited. Your presence is your gift.
