Frances Ramona "Mona" Byers
5/4/29 – 9/18/22
Mona was born on May 4, 1929 to Jennie and Anton Kabelin in Wenatchee, WA. Mona was soon after adopted by George and Ruth Karr of Deary, ID late in that same year and lived in that area during her childhood years.
In 1946 she married the love of her life – Leonard L. Byers and their first son Les was born. In 1948 the family moved to Priest River, Idaho where he worked as a logger. In 1950 they had their second son Larry.
During the following years in Priest River they raised their family and enjoyed summers at the lake, hunting, and camping at Leonard's job sites during the summer with fellow workers in the surrounding areas. Mona worked part-time for several businesses in town including Simpson's Variety, before she opened her own store "Mona's Variety" in 1983 downtown. During her Mona Variety years she lost her husband of 38 years due to a logging accident in 1984.
Mona continued to run the store for several years after the loss. She then in 1988 decided to move to Seaside, OR to live and work. Mona moved every 5-7 years back and forth from Seaside to Priest River and back again until late in life she came home to stay. Mona then moved to River Mountain Village in the last stage of her life.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leonard, and several half-brothers and sisters. Mona is survived by sons -Les (Elaine), Larry (Diana), four grandchildren: Travis, Tracie, Jenny, and Nathan. 10 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family thanks the staff at River Mountain Village for their kind care of Mona during the past six years and Spokane Hospice for their help with her care the last few weeks. Mona was 93 years old when she passed and lived a good life with family and friends.
At Mona's request there will be no service. The family suggests any donations be made in Mona's name to the Newport Food Bank.
