On September 14, 2023 after a long courageous battle with cancer, Loyd Hastings passed away.  He was born March 15, 1943 in Riverside, California to Bert and Hildred Hastings.

He grew up in the Northwest travelling to many locations due to his father's job with the Army Corps of Engineers.  The family moved to Usk, Washington in 1959 and ran the Usk Hotel.  He graduated from Cusick High School in 1961.  After high school he moved out on his own and worked in Usk before moving to Estacada, Oregon where he started his career as a logger and truck driver.

While in Oregon, he joined a band called Blue Mountain Aires.  He was a talented musician playing both guitar and the accordion and enjoyed music throughout his lifetime. Loyd had over 50 years behind the wheel of a big rig.  He was right at home while on the road and at one point, owned his own trucking company with 5 semi-trucks.   He was an avid farmer and rancher as well, operating the Carousel Ranch with his wife of 25 years, Kathy.  They raised and boarded horses as well as harvesting hay in Pend Oreille County.  As with most farmers, he could tear down, fix, and reassemble almost anything and enjoyed every minute of it.

He had an intense passion for flying.  While he never gained his pilot's license, he enjoyed ground school and learning to fly.  He was also somewhat of a history buff.  He could often be found buried in a book about some aspect of WWII.

Loyd loved the time spent with his son snowmobiling, fishing and crabbing or just working on projects.

He also loved to travel, he and Kathy would go South frequenting Arizona and Mexico.  They also enjoyed an occasional cruise.  He was a well-known fixture around the Cusick area and was often helping others with whatever was needed. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, family, and untold numbers of friends and acquaintances.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bert and Hildred Hastings.  He is survived by wife Kathy Hastings, daughter Debra L. Hastings Marthaller of Spokane, son Dale and wife Michele Hastings of Newport, stepdaughter's Cheryl Sample-Reese and husband Gary of Cusick and Becky Walrath and husband Ray of Usk, numerous relatives from Utah and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, family and friends!
Please join us for a gathering of family and friends for a graveside service at Calispell Cemetery, Pease Road, Usk, WA on September 23rd at 11:00 am followed by a gathering of family and friends for a potluck at 1:00 pm at the American Legion Post #217, 105 Timber St. Cusick, WA.
