Priest River

Obituary

Larry McMillian, known to many as True Dog, passed away peacefully at his home in Priest River, Idaho, on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at the age of 81. Larry Dale McMillian was born on February 18, 1944 at Hillcrest Memorial Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Carl Eugene "Butch" and Loreta Mae (Long) McMillian. He grew up in Oklahoma and Colorado before his family settled in Kimball, Nebraska, graduating from Kimball County High School in 1962. While in school he was a member of the chorus, played basketball and golf, and ran track.

Larry attended the University of Wyoming and volunteered for the Air Force in 1964 hoping to become a pilot. That dream was delayed (but never forgotten) when he was discharged for his less-than-ideal eyesight. In 1965, Larry married high-school classmate Judy Ann Barrett, and together they had two children: son Shawn Michael, and daughter Robbie Lynn. The family lived in Bountiful (UT), Anchorage (AK), Kennewick (WA), and Spokane (WA). In 1980, he achieved his dream of attaining his pilot's license and owning his own small plane. In 1997, Larry entered into a committed relationship with Diana Walks In Water that continued until his death.

For decades, Larry worked as a salesman in the electrical supply industry for companies Graybar, Leviton, and Robert A. Amey Company. His easy demeanor and wit made him many friends among his coworkers and customers. He reluctantly retired in 2018 and missed those personal connections he made while regularly traveling the Inland Northwest. An avid outdoorsman, Larry loved to camp, hunt, fish, and shoot both modern and historic weapons, all of which he had done since he was a child. He spent many hours in his younger years around campfires, and his later years in his beloved camper, at primitive camp rendezvous[GU1] , and working a table at gun shows. He enjoyed woodworking and watching college football, Gonzaga basketball, and any and every golf tournament he could find. He loved gadgets and we expect Amazon will notice the downturn in deliveries to Priest River.

Larry was preceded in death by his father Carl in 1980, his cherished mother Loreta in 2023, Diana's son Sierra Ward, and many treasured friends. Larry is survived by son Shawn (Shari) McMillian, granddaughter Luna McMillian, daughter Robbie McMillian (Jeff Chamberlain) and former wife Judy McMillian. He is also survived by his partner Diana Walks In Water and her children Winter Ward Roback, Cheyenne (Elisha) Ward, Dakota (Samantha) Ward, Anna Ward (Jeff Morris), Jessie Ward (Will Lohman), and grandchildren, Noelle Roback, Tyler Roback, Romeo Ward, Aurora Ward, Maddox Morris and Kiara Pierce-Ward. Additionally, Larry is survived by uncles, aunts and cousins, as well as many found-family and friends encountered along the way. He was a loyal, generous, and true friend. While his passing was unexpected, it comes after several years of increasingly difficult medical issues. His loved ones are relieved he is no longer in pain, but will dearly miss his charm, his laugh, and his love. Please visit www.shermancampbell.com to share thoughts and memories via the online guestbook. A celebration of life will be held in the coming months. Those close to Larry request that instead of flowers or memorials, you go outside, look at something beautiful in nature, and raise a cold (cheap) beer to the life of this wonderful man.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 13th at the Priest River Event Center at 12pm with a reception to follow.
