Joyce Marlene VanLoon was a treasured wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her Heavenly Father called her home on October 7, 2024 at the age of 76
The middle child, Joyce was born in Glendale, California to Alfred and Beth Hugenot and would go on to dedicate her life to living her dreams and making others' dreams come true. She was a vibrant, independent, strong-willed force of nature. After graduating high school, Joyce started her working life in the banking industry.
Joyce met her future husband, Rod VanLoon, at Hinson Baptist in Portland, Oregon. They were married in 1977, and built their first house together in Aloha, Oregon, where they welcomed their daughter, Joy, and son, Michael, to the family. Joyce was an excellent homemaker and taught her children reading, writing and arithmetic to levels well above elementary education standards before either of them entered preschool. Her children fondly remember her reciting poems such as Paul Revere's Ride, spending many nights running around the living room with the sound system blaring Take Another Lap Around Mount Sanai, and family camping trips in the black and red 1986 Suburban. Joyce was gifted with words and wrote many songs and poems that were sung on long car rides, or recited to help remember items, dates, or how to spell tricky words.
Joyce loved her Bible and read through it with Rod eight times with Ray Comfort's My Comfort is Jesus devotional. Joyce knew what she believed and lived it to the best of her ability.
Joyce made lifelong friends and inspired many people through her career in real estate. She knew what her values were and she held fiercely to her standards. Loyalty, dedication, kindness, helpfulness, and generosity defined her in spades. She will not be forgotten by those who were blessed to find themselves in her world.
Make new friends, but keep the old.
For one is silver, and the other, gold.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 47 years, Rod VanLoon, daughter, Joyful Bell, son, Michael VanLoon, grandchildren, Zoë and Emily Tower, brother, Alan Hugenot, and sister, Zoë Brown. Her warmth, kindness and strength will continue to leave a lasting impact on those who knew her.
We will cherish her memory forever.
