Obituary

On Monday, June 15, 2020, George David Mondich, loving husband and father of three children passed away at the age 82.

George was born on October 10, 1937 in Metaline Falls, WA to Steve and Anna Mondich.

George graduated from Metaline Falls High School in 1956.  He went on to study at WSU and was then drafted into the US Army in 1961.  After that he returned to Metaline Falls where he married Macil Rice, October 21, 1967.

George worked for 17 years as an assayer for Pend Oreille mines.  Once the mine closed down, he worked at the Louisiana Pacific sawmill and Mitchell trucking before he landed at the Lehigh Portland Cement Co.  In 1991 Lehigh closed and he and Macil moved to Spokane and then Clarkston where they managed retirement homes.  Upon their retirement they returned to Metaline.  If they were not at the family cabin, they were traveling which included exploring forty-five states and six ocean cruises.

George was very active and had many interests.  He coached Pee Wee Baseball and was an assistant baseball coach for Selkirk High School.  He was the secretary of the Metaline Falls Rod and Gun Club for 25 years.  He served many years as a board member for Selkirk school district.  He was instrumental in starting the Biddy Basketball program that is still enjoyed by many of our area's youth.  George enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and spending many wonderful summers with his family at the cabin on Sullivan Lake.

He will be remembered by his family as a very loving husband, father and grandfather. He raised his family with a smile on his face and a wonderful sense of humor.  Laughter was a large part of everyday.

George was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helene and brothers Peter, Nicholas and Stanley (infant).  He is survived by his wife Macil, his three children Michele (Valentino) Lesesne, Kari (Dan) Dawson and Michael (Kathy) Mondich, ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Carol (Dick) Mondich-Long along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at The Cutter Theatre in Metaline Falls at 12:00 p.m. with a reception following at the American Legion Post 144.  Flowers may be sent to the Cutter Theatre and donations may be made to The Cutter Theatre or the American Legion Post 144.

The family would like to thank Dr Andrew Coletti, and nurses Gladys and Denise who gave such special care.  Selkirk Community Health Clinic who were always so wonderful.  And neighbor Tom who always watched over the house, kept the driveway plowed and anything else that was needed.   There are many other people that deserve the family's appreciation but are far too many to list.
