Donald Dean
Fries
Nov 21, 1934 — Mar 25, 2024
Mead
Donald Dean Fries, 89, passed away March 25, 2024 in his home in Mead, WA. He was born on November 21,1934 in Pasco, WA to John and Elsie (Stromberger) Fries. He graduated from Sprague High school and went directly into the army. From the army he began his college career ultimately graduating from Whitworth College with his Master's degree in education. While he was at Whitworth, he met Carolyn Humphries and they married on December 26,1959. Don had a 43-year career in education. He started in the Deer Park school district and then moved to Shaw Junior High in Spokane and taught history there for 38 years. In addition to his classroom duties, he put on the school convocations, and ran the lunchroom with a lot of humor and an iron fist. Don was a dedicated teacher who cared deeply for his students. He was unorthodox in his methods and no one would accuse him of being boring. He had a significant impact on countless students. Don was a part of the Army Reserves for 27 years and this was a very important part of his life. He rose to the rank of Colonel. He loved the army and he loved his country. Don had a passion for classic cars, with the most beloved being the Pierce Arrow. He restored two rare Pierces, plus a Pierce Arrow Travelodge. He enjoyed collecting and working on a variety of classic cars over the years and being active in a few car clubs--the Hassie Club and the Early Ford V-8 Club. Don loved his family and showed it by helping them in various ways. He enjoyed his grandchildren's accomplishments and attended many performances and events in support of them. In all of his life Don was the kind of man who went at full speed and tackled everything in front of him with determination. He was larger than life in so many ways--the life of the party, the leader out front, the loudest in the room, and one of the most generous men you'll meet. Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carolyn. His children, Susan Mattice, Luann Kirkham (Cory), Dean Fries (Susanna) and his six grandchildren--Malia, Sarah, Sam, Anna, Beth, and Noelle.A service will be held on Saturday, April 13 2024 at 1:00 at Calvary Spokane, 511 W Hastings Road.Memorial gifts may be given in support of Horizon Hospice.
