Delbert Clarence Nelson

July 12, 1933 - April 21, 2024

Our loving father, Delbert "Bert" Nelson passed away with his children by his side on April 21, 2024 at the age of 90. Born on July 12, 1933 in Oldtown, Idaho, he was the youngest of 6 children born to Ole and Odelia (Strand) Nelson. Bert graduated from Newport High School in 1951 and married his high school sweetheart, Melva Crysler later that year.  Bert and Melva were married for 52 years before her passing in 2004.

Bert went to work for Diamond Lumber after graduation and worked there for 45 years until his retirement in 1996.

As a proud Idaho resident, he enjoyed all outdoor activities. Hunting, fishing, camping, picking huckleberries and horn hunting were among his favorites. For many years he looked forward to the weeklong elk hunt in the Coeur d' Alene mountains with family and friends as well as hosting summer reunions at their home in Oldtown. He also enjoyed the many pets he had over the years, some he adopted and some that just stopped by and adopted him. A drive with family or friends up dusty mountain roads or along the river just to look for wildlife or admire the beauty of this area was a favorite pastime.

Delbert was preceded in death by his wife, Melva; son, Jeff Nelson; grandson, David Shepherd; parents, Ole and Odelia Nelson; siblings: Don, Dorothy and DeWayne Nelson; Doris Hamilton; and Deloris Dayton.

He is survived by his children, Kathy Scott (Ron) Lakewood, CO; Colleen and Wade Shepherd, Newport, WA; John and Ruth Nelson, Priest River, ID; 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren and 8 nieces and nephews.

Bert was dearly loved by his family and will be missed by many that knew him.

A graveside memorial service at Newport Cemetery is scheduled for Thursday May 23, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. Sherman-Campbell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.  Family and friends are welcome to visit their website at www.shermancampbell.com.
