Obituary

Cleona Mae Farnam Shafer Porter

Cleona Porter was in her home when she departed this world on June 4, 2023.

She was born in Republic, WA on October 5, 1934 to Cleon (Click) and Lona Farnam of Orient, WA.  Her four brothers were Donald, Larry, Richard and Charles.  Her sister, Carol Bussard, became her best friend.

The family eventually moved to Ione, WA where she attended school, graduating from Ione High School in 1953.  She married Vergil Shafer, the father of her children, later that year and, after short stays in California and Alaska, settled as a young mother back in Ione.  She moved to Forks, WA in 1974.  Later she lived in Kettle Falls, Salmo BC, Redmond WA, Tiger Mead and more time in Ione.   Her last years were spent in Spokane.

Cleona's hard work and friendly personality made her standout at several of her jobs.  Customers she met while working at places like Golden Corral Restaurant became lifelong friends.

Cleona had a talent to transform any place she lived into a warm and cozy home where people felt welcome.  Celebrations and holidays, even Sunday suppers after church, were special.  Just stopping by for a visit was encouraged.  Her old-fashioned gardens and sitting areas were beautiful and inviting, encouraging a person to sit, relax and enjoy.  Feeding and watching the birds brought her joy.

She loved music and dancing.  Water brought her peace whether swimming at the lake, boating in Puget Sound, sitting by the river, wading in the creek or walking on an ocean beach.  Most summers in younger years were spent camping and hiking outdoors.

Church was a large part of her life.  She spent much time serving in important ways at Ione Baptist Church and Forks Baptist Church, doing everything from painting and cleaning to directing Bible School and heading pastor selection committees.

Five grateful people are blessed to call her "Mom".  She raised 3 daughters, Sheri Johnnie (Phil), Yvonne Pullins and Lynne Turner (Chuck).  Her 2 sons are Gary Shafer (Barbara) and Todd Shafer (Klarissa).  Her true life's work was loving and caring for her children, doing whatever she could to teach them and make their life full.  She was dedicated to teaching them life skills while having fun and making friends.  She also had eleven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Cleona will be missed by many families and many friends. A graveside service will be held at the Ione Cemetery on Friday, June 16th at 11:00 AM followed by a reception at the Ed Building next to the Ione Baptist Church. Sherman-Campbell Funeral Home in Newport, WA is in charge of arrangements. Family and friends are welcome to visit their website at www.shermancampbell.com
