Charles "Charlie" Schaefer Sr.  April 24, 1941 - September 27, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our friend Charlie Schaefer, who passed away peacefully at his home in Newport.

Charlie was born in Brooklyn, New York to parents John and Catharine Schaefer.  He was very private about his family and home life, and not a lot is known about them.

After high school Charlie joined the United States Air Force where he served honorably from March 1960-August 1962.  After his military service he lived in Las Vegas, Nevada and worked as an insurance salesman through the 70's and 80's.  Charlie received numerous awards for his prowess as a salesman.  He had many wild and crazy stories about the lifestyle in Vegas.

Charlie retired in the Newport area where he focused on his love of boating.  He is credited with providing boater safety education to thousands of citizens in Washington and Idaho.  He received awards from the Pend Oreille County and Bonner County Sheriff's Offices, as well as Parks and Recreation agencies in both Washington and Idaho.  This included the Western States Boating Educator of the Year in 2015.  Charlie was dedicated to his community and wanted to make a difference.  He was kind, entertaining, and fiercely loyal to his friends.

A graveside memorial service is scheduled for Friday, October 20th at 1100 am in the Newport Cemetery.  Charlie will be greatly missed.
