Carolyn A. Vaughn, a resident of Pend Oreille County in the Newport area, passed away suddenly at the age of 79, on Monday, March 7, 2022. Carolyn and her husband Paul Vaughn, who preceded her in death in 2012, retired to Pend Oreille County on the land of their dreams in 2000. They fell in love with the area when passing through upon their earlier travels throughout the western states. She survived the death of her son Jeffrey in 2020 and is herself survived by two of her three children, daughters Kimberly and Pamela, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, her older half-brother, three younger siblings and a host of cousins and their families.

Although born in Pasadena California in 1942, Carolyn spent her youth in rural areas and the mountains of southern California where she met her husband of 49 years while in college working toward her teaching credential. Carolyn loved teaching and did so in almost every community her husband's career took them to, mainly rural areas of southern California and Nevada. Her particular joy was in motivating and seeing her junior high students develop into successful young adults. She was instrumental in developing curricula that engaged her students and others. Carolyn retired early, due essentially to complications resulting from her childhood polio, but even after retirement she home-schooled and tutored children when opportunity presented.

Upon moving to the Newport area, Paul and Carolyn enjoyed the natural beauty of their property and the company of their neighbors, successfully encouraging other family members to also adopt this area as their home. Throughout their lives they opened their home to both friends and relatives in need and Carolyn continued to help people whenever she could even during periods of serious illness, such as her battle with cancer two years past. Her generosity of spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.

A celebration of her life is being planned for later in the spring when nature's new life has begun to emerge. Services will be held at Sherman Campbell Funeral Home, 423 W Second Street, in Newport on Saturday, April 23, at 10 am, to be followed by a reception.
