Alvin R. Cooper, a loving husband, caring father figure, and admiring grandfather passed away peacefully on November 28 at the age of 73. Known to all as Karim, he was born on November 15, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but saw an opportunity and a calling to head west. At just 19 years of age, Karim left everything he knew and drove to California where he was a passionate civil rights activist and ambitious to learn and explore how to work on and repair nearly anything. Karim later moved to Newport in 1979 to fulfill his life goal of owning land of his own to care for and nurture. He became an integral part of his community through his unwavering dedication to helping others.

Though Karim did not have any children biologically, he embraced his role as a father figure for many throughout the Newport area with open arms. He took great pride in teaching life skills and sharing his vast knowledge of the world around him. His wisdom and guidance will continue to shape the lives of those he touched long after his passing.

Karim was a man of many talents, working most recently as a home health nurse with visits to recovering patients throughout Pend Oreille County. His ability to create or fix nearly anything was incredible. Karim took great pride in being self-sufficient and living on his homestead, providing for himself and others with his resourcefulness.

In addition to his work ethic, Karim was known for his generosity and willingness to help those in need. As a member of the Newport community, he never hesitated to lend a helping hand when someone needed assistance. His kindness and compassion touched many lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Karim is survived by his loving wife, Karen Cooper; stepsons Ramman and Drisan; grandchildren Zendryn, Zeydriel, and Chasity; as well as siblings John, Carolyn, Chris, and Lydia, extended family members, and numerous friends who will miss him dearly. His memory will live on through the lives he touched and the love that he shared with those around him.
